Make sure your computer is protected. Since it is your main
way to do business and make money, you will want to make sure you don't lose
it. Keep your data backed up on a separate hard drive and install virus scans
and firewalls. This way, you can be fully protected.
Check with your city hall or the city planning office to
learn if there are any zoning regulations that will inhibit you from starting
your home business. You may find yourself being ordered to cease operations
down the road if you are breaking any of the zoning laws in the area.
Look into the market to learn if what you are considering is
going to be profitable. If what you are thinking about working with is already
saturated with other people doing the same thing, you are going to find it
quite difficult to compete with home businesses that have been going for a
while.
Check to see what kind of business insurance you need. Some
states require mandatory business insurance. Before you start your business
it's important to check into the cost of it and what your state requires. You
want to make sure your business is protected and minimize your risks associated
with it.
Running a business from home can be a double edged sword.
You could blunt the blade however by accepting that even though you are running
it from home, it is still a business. This will prevent you from being
lackadaisical about it, and ultimately running it into the ground because of
that.
